A stress echocardiogram is a test done to assess how well the heart works under stress. The “stress” can be triggered by either exercise on a treadmill or a medicine called dobutamine. A dobutamine stress echocardiogram (DSE) may be used if you are unable to exercise. Dobutamine is put in a vein and causes the heart to beat faster. Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) Use of intraoperative TEE for monitoring purposes (CPT ® code 93318) performed by the anesthesiologist during cardiopulmonary surgery (e.g., cardiopulmonary bypass and valvular surgery) is included in the reimbursement for the anesthesia service and not separately reportable. Report the stress echocardiogram (93350 or 93351) with contrast administration code 93352. In addition, report the applicable contrast agent codes (Q9955, Q9956, Q9957, or Q9950). Per the NCCI manual and correct coding edits, Medicare does not allow separate reporting for the IV insertion or injection procedure.
