Aug 2, 2014 · I have a 6-speed automatic transmission. The transmission went to 4th and skidded the tires significant enough to create smoke from the tires. Downshifting from 6th to 4th at 65 (or even 75+) mph shouldn't cause the tires to lock up. It might cause a 1500 +/- rpm jump, but that should be nowhere close to tire lockup. Easy to fix, just take the top of the trans off from inside the cab and check it out, easy to see if it's trying to go into two gears at the same time. Big screwdriver will pry it right.
